Isn't it time for one? I find your lack of an iPhone app and RSS feeds disturbing.

To be fair, the site has an rss feed, the forums don't.

This might be a good place to start to get it rolling on the forums themselves

As a non iphone guy, iphone app = meh

Hey Wike, if that app goes through, could you send me a screen cap of it?

Oh wait... never mind.

As an iPhone guy, I want something that makes reading forums significantly easier. iPhone app = win.

Oh I dare, but when it comes to H8 and iPhones the reality hammer rears its ugly head and hammers me down.

Ok, here is the reality hammer of site upgrades.

This CMS software is very old (hence the occasional script kiddie hack job), as in several versions obsolete. The software also pre-dates my current hosting service provider, which means it was ported over by hand and not with the nice auto-installer portal provided by the host, which in turn means it is not recognized by the auto-installer for the purposes of doing auto-upgrades. The CMS itself also contains several hacked-in modules which typically have to be manually re-hacked into each new version - if they are compatible at all. These things combine to mean the upgrade process itself is a tedious, time consuming, manual process that is prone to lots of human error.

The obvious solution is to move over to a new CMS package, especially one supported by the auto-installer, which would also make further upgrades simpler to perform. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to convert things over from one package to another, and even doing so "the hard way" is limited to specific versions of one to the other (e.g. 7.1 will port only to 3.2).

Once upon a time, I mapped out a path to do so, which involved several incremental upgrades to the existing package (ref: manual process above), a manual install of the new package, then one or more incremental upgrades of that, finishing with an auto-install of the latest version of the new CMS. Many of those steps are subject to a backup-and-hack shellgame with the database too.

By my estimate, this is at least a week's worth of evenings to re-research that upgrade path, then a full weekend's worth of time to actually perform it, with the site down the entire time.

I don't have anything like that kind of time in the forseeable future. If one of you guys has piles and piles of free time to spend, AND the technical competency (basic LAMP stack-type experience) to do it, let me know and maybe we can work through it. To my knowledge, none of you currently fit both of those criteria, but maybe I'm wrong.

Otherwise, use your phone to make phone calls, and live without Freebooters being Twitter.

Fair enough - the blog that I had (past tense - it's still up, but I never post) is several versions old because upgrading it as well would be a multistep process that I also do not have the time to spend.

Carry on.
